In this section, you have the opportunity to take advantage of the new and improved Refine Edge feature. The improvements make it easier for you to make difficult selections like fur and hair.
Double-click to open the file in Adobe Photoshop. Again, you will position the images so that you can easily drag one image file to the other. This assures that the new layer lands on top of the stacking order. Release when you see the cursor with the plus sign. If asked, do not save the file. Notice that Photoshop automatically builds a selection based upon the image area you are painting.
In this next section, you will refine you initial selection by using the new and improved Refine Edge feature. The Refine Edge dialog box appears. You can hold down the space bar and click and drag to reposition the view.
As you can see, the selection, especially around the hair, leaves a lot to be desired. You will fix this selection by taking advantage of the newly added Edge detection feature. You can already see a refinement in the selection. Click in the area of the hair to refine the selection around the hair. When you feel the selection is complete, choose Layer Mask from the Output To drop-down menu in the Output section of the Refine Edge dialog box.
Press OK. A cursor appears, and the Options bar reflects properties for your text. If you would prefer, you can select the drop-down menu and scroll to the Myriad Pro typeface.
The Color picker appears. Select white, or a light color. You will now add the text for the year, and then rotate and position it on the left side of the image. You can click on the confirmation checkbox in the upper-right of the Type tool Options bar. Note that the Options bar now offers resources that allow you to resize and rotate this layer. In this last part of the lesson you take advantage of the new Puppet Warp feature. Before you start you will create a copy of the bottom Background layer.

Blending modes afect how the color pixels on one layer blend with pixels in the layers underneath. Currently, the blending mode for both layers is Normal. Click OK in the Duplicate Layer dialog box. You can apply a blending mode to an entire layer group and get a very diferent result than if you apply the same blending mode to each of the layers individually. When a blending mode is applied to a group, Photoshop treats the group as a single merged object and then applies the blending mode. Experiment with blending modes to get the efect you want.
In this case, the postmark becomes a little stronger. A Transform bounding box appears around the beach image. Watch the Width and Height percentages in the options bar. Drag clockwise to rotate the beach image approximately 15 degrees. You can also enter 15 in the Set Rotation box in the options bar.
Adding empty layers to a ile is comparable to adding blank sheets of acetate to a stack of images. Realistic- looking clouds appear behind the image. Photoshop places the image as a Smart Object, which is a layer you can edit without making permanent changes. Click OK to close the Color Picker. Or, hover and then click anywhere outside the gradient picker to close it. If you want to be sure you drag straight up, press the Shift key as the gradient name.
